Root canal treatment is applied when there is a deep cavity in the tooth or when the tooth is infected. Dental root canal treatment is performed when inflammation occurs due to various factors such as cavities, trauma, gum disease, or because of the possibility of inflammation in the vascular nerve package (this is called dental pulp) in the middle of the tooth. In this way, tooth loss in the mouth is successfully prevented and the function of the tooth in the mouth is maintained. Since the tooth for root canal treatment will be anesthetized, the patient does not feel pain during the procedure. If the condition of the tooth is suitable, root canal treatment can be completed in a single session with the decision of the physician. In some inflammatory conditions due to the disease of the tooth, it may not be appropriate to finish the root canal treatment in a single session. Intracanal drug use may be required to ensure canal disinfection. In such cases, two or longer sessions may be needed.
What is a root canal treatment?
A root canal is a dental procedure used to treat infection at the centre of a tooth (the pulp). It involves removing the infected or damaged pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the canals, then filling and sealing them.
Why do I need a root canal?
You need a root canal if the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected or inflamed due to decay, repeated dental procedures, cracks, or trauma. Left untreated, the infection can lead to severe pain or an abscess.
Is a root canal painful?
Thanks to modern techniques and local anaesthesia, a root canal is not more painful than a regular filling. Some discomfort after the procedure is normal, but it’s usually manageable with over-the-counter painkillers.
What are the signs I might need a root canal?
- Severe tooth pain when chewing or applying pressure
- Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold
- Darkening or discoloration of the tooth
- Swelling and tenderness in nearby gums
- A recurring pimple on the gums
.
How long does a root canal take?
Most root canals can be completed in 1–2 appointments, depending on the complexity of the tooth. Each appointment usually lasts about 60–90 minutes.
What happens after a root canal?
After the root canal, the tooth may be temporarily filled. A permanent filling or dental crown is placed later to protect and restore function.
How long does a root canal last?
With proper care, a root canal-treated tooth can last a lifetime, especially if restored with a crown and maintained with good oral hygiene.
Can I avoid a root canal?
Sometimes, yes—early treatment of cavities or gum issues can prevent it. However, once the pulp is infected, a root canal is the only option to save the tooth besides extraction.
Is extraction better than a root canal?
Not usually. Dentists prefer to save your natural tooth when possible. An extraction may seem simpler, but replacing a missing tooth (e.g., with an implant or bridge) is more costly and time-consuming.
