JAW TIP CORRECTION (MENTOPLASTY):
Mediglobe works with experienced and professional teams in chin tip correction (Mentoplasty) aesthetic and surgical interventions. Mediglobe’s health tourism team works with hospitals in Turkey that comply with European standards and creates bespoke treatment packages that you can choose from.
Mentoplasty is the aesthetic surgery of the chin and is the restructuring of the chin to make it compatible with the face. All organs on the face (nose, lips, chin, etc.) must be harmonious and balanced within themselves. The ideal chin position should be 2-3 mm behind an imaginary line drawn downward from the base of the nose, deviations back more than 2-3 mm are considered a weak chin and vice versa strong chin. In women, the ideal chin position may be slightly behind this ideal location, which creates a more desirable aesthetic appearance. Men often prefer a strong jawline giving a masculine appearance.
Mentoplasty can be performed by placing an implant in the patient to correct a weak chin, enlarging a small or retracted chin, or moving and advancing a part of the patient’s chin. In patients with very small jaws, the body’s tissue can be used to add to the jaw, and its bone, usually from the hip. Mentoplasty can also be done by removing a piece of bone to reduce an overly prominent chin that is protruding and spoils the overall appearance.
Surgery method:
X-rays may be requested to determine the amount of chin enlargement or reduction to be made, and to make changes in height and position to provide a better appearance before the surgery. Depending on the operation to be performed, it may take between 30 minutes and 3 hours. It is not necessary to stay in the hospital for short-term interventions.
If an implant is required for the chin, the surgeon starts the procedure with a small incision under the chin or inside the mouth. In this case, the patient is informed in advance. The implant is placed in front of the chin, deep into the soft tissues.
No screws or plates are usually required for mentoplasty. An implant is placed under the membrane surrounding the jawbone. The aim is to reduce the projection of the chin. The desired shape is obtained by shaving the chin a little.
Postoperative:
The pain that may occur can be controlled with medications. There may be enema and bruising, but it starts to subside after a few days. A bandage is applied to the chin for 2 or 3 days after the operation. The sutures used are removed within 5 or 7 days after the operation or they dissolve on their own. The feeling of tension in the jaw decreases over time. Chewing may be restricted for a few days after the surgery, so it is necessary to feed with liquid and soft foods. You can usually return to your daily life 10 days after the operation.
What is Mentoplasty (Jaw Tip Correction or Chin Surgery)?
Mentoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure that reshapes the chin to improve facial proportions. It can involve:
- Chin augmentation (implant or bone advancement)
- Chin reduction (bone shaving/removal)
Who is a good candidate for chin surgery?
You may be a good candidate if:
- You have a recessed (weak) or overly prominent chin
- You want to improve jawline definition
- You’re seeking better facial symmetry
- You’re in good health and have realistic expectations
What are the types of chin augmentation?
- Chin implants (most common): Solid silicone or other materials placed over the bone to add projection.
- Sliding genioplasty: The surgeon cuts and repositions part of the chin bone, typically for more complex reshaping or when implants aren’t ideal.
How is chin reduction done?
For large or protruding chins, the surgeon may shave or remove bone from the chin to reduce its size and projection.
Is the surgery painful?
Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort, swelling, and tightness. Pain is usually manageable with prescribed medications and improves within a few days.
What is the recovery time?
- Return to work: 5–10 days
- Swelling and bruising: 2–3 weeks, with final results visible in a few months
- Full healing (especially with bone work): up to 6 months
- A soft diet is often recommended initially
Will I have visible scars?
- No visible scars if done intraorally (incisions inside the mouth)
- If done externally (under the chin), the scar is small and usually well-hidden
What are the risks?
- Infection
- Implant shifting (in augmentation cases)
- Numbness or changes in chin/lip sensation (due to nerve proximity)
- Unsatisfactory cosmetic results (may need revision)
- Bone healing complications (in sliding genioplasty)
How long do chin implants last?
Chin implants are typically permanent but can be removed or replaced if needed. They’re made to last a lifetime unless complications occur.
Can Mentoplasty be combined with other surgeries?
Yes — often combined with:
- Rhinoplasty (to improve facial balance)
- Neck liposuction or facelift
- Jaw surgery (for functional or orthodontic corrections)
Is the result natural-looking?
Yes — when done by a skilled, board-certified plastic or facial surgeon. The goal is usually a subtle enhancement that complements your natural features.
