LIPOSUCTION

LIPOSUCTION:

Unhealthy nutritional habits (not eating healthy, insufficient water consumption) and lifestyle (lack of movement and exercise) are the most important reasons for people to gain or lose weight. Certain areas of the body such as the abdomen, waist, hips, outer and inner thighs, and knees are areas of fat accumulation that are resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction is an aesthetic intervention related to the reduction and correction of fat deposits in many areas of the body such as under the chin, cheeks, neck, upper and inner sides of the arms, breasts, chest, abdomen, waist-hip, thigh, inner side of the knee, back of the leg. It is also applied as a complementary procedure in other body contour correction surgeries (tummy tuck, breast reduction, etc.).

WHAT IS LIPOSUCTION?

Liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure in which fat is removed from the body by absorbing fat deposits in certain parts of the body with a special vacuum or special injectors. With this surgery, while the fat tissue that is increased in volume and resistant to diet and exercise is removed from the body, the number of existing fat cells is also reduced. Recently, ultrasound energy has also been used as a separate method. In this method, the excess fat tissues are broken up with ultrasound waves, then the fat cells are removed, similar to the liposuction procedure.

Along with the recovery of excess stubborn fat in deep layers with liposuction, fat accumulations that cause contour irregularity can be corrected with the method called superficial liposuction or liposculpture, which has been developed recently. The liposculpture technique is also a method that gives definite results in removing sagging skin and eliminating stubborn cellulite.

HOW IS THE SURGERY AND AFTER?

The operation is performed in hospital conditions in the operating room and under the supervision of an anesthesiologist. The operation may take between 1-5 hours depending on the condition of the application areas. Depending on the extent of the surgery, it is possible to leave the hospital on the same day or after 24 hours.

Post-surgery is usually comfortable. The pain is very low and the pain that may occur can be relieved with painkillers. At the end of the surgery, a special bandage is applied to the vacuum applied areas and the patient is dressed in a special corset. After the operation, the patient is dressed. The use of the corset may continue for 5-6 weeks, depending on the patient’s condition. There may be purplish discoloration, swelling, tingling, and burning sensation in the vacuum applied areas. These disappear on their own within 3 weeks. Surgical scars also become indistinct within 2-6 months.

What is liposuction surgery?

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes excess fat from specific areas of the body using suction. It’s commonly done on the abdomen, thighs, hips, arms, back, or under the chin.

Who is a good candidate for liposuction surgery?

A good candidate:

  • Is at or near a stable weight
  • Has stubborn fat that doesn’t respond to diet/exercise
  • Has good skin elasticity
  • Is in good general health
Is liposuction surgery a weight-loss method?

No. Liposuction is not intended for significant weight loss. It targets localized fat deposits, not overall body weight.

What areas can be treated with liposuction surgery?

Common areas include:

  • Abdomen and waist
  • Thighs (inner and outer)
  • Hips and buttocks
  • Upper arms
  • Chin and neck
  • Back and chest
How is liposuction surgery performed?

A small tube called a cannula is inserted through small incisions. Fat is broken up and suctioned out. Different techniques include:

  • Tumescent liposuction
  • Ultrasound-assisted (UAL)
  • Laser-assisted (SmartLipo)
  • Power-assisted (PAL)
What is the recovery time?

Most people return to light activity within a few days and work within a week or two. Full recovery and swelling reduction may take several weeks to months.

Will I have scars?

Scarring is minimal since the incisions are very small. They typically fade over time.

Is the fat removal permanent?

Yes—fat cells are permanently removed. But if you gain weight after the surgery, fat can return in other areas, or remaining fat cells can expand.

What are the risks or side effects?

Possible risks include:

  • Bruising/swelling
  • Irregular contours
  • Infection
  • Fluid buildup
  • Numbness or nerve damage (rare)
