Why do we need Hair Transplant Surgery?

Many factors such as aging, hormonal changes, and hereditary factors can cause hair loss. Hair loss can also occur after burns and traumas. Poor scalp nutrition, vitamin deficiencies, dandruff, and even wearing a hat for too long can cause hair loss.

In hair transplantation, the person should have healthy hair on the back and sides of their head to be used as a donor area. At the same time, factors such as hair colour, the thickness of the hair, and wavy or curly hair are also important in hair transplantation applications.

The most important issues to be considered in hair transplantation:

  • Hair transplantation should be done in a hospital and operating room environment.
  • All evaluations and tests of the patient must be done, and all possible risk factors must be eliminated.
  • The recommendations of our experienced doctors should be followed before and after the application.

HAIR TRANSPLANTATION WITH FUE TECHNIQUE

There are several techniques in hair transplantation. Sometimes two or more techniques can be used together for the best results. Among the transplantation techniques, punch graft, mini graft, micrograft, slit graft, and strip graft are generally used in patients who want smaller interventions. Techniques such as flaps, tissue expansion, and scalp reduction are applied to patients who want more changes.

As for women, one out of every five women experiences hair loss due to old age, illness, and hormonal changes after menopause. There is no patchy shedding in women as in men. On the contrary, widespread shedding and thinning occur in the entire scalp. In particular, mini-grafts are a good option for these patients to plump the areas where there is thinning of the hair. As the donor area, the back of the head, where the hair strands are denser, should be used. Flaps and tissue expansion procedures can be used in patients with excessive hair loss.

Hair Transplant Planning

Hair transplantation is a process in which the technique to be chosen varies depending on the person. First things to know;

  • What is the growth characteristic of the hair?
  • What is the degree of hair loss?
  • Family history of hair loss (Is there a genetic problem?)
  • Have you had a hair transplant before.
  • Life style
  • What are the expectations after hair transplantation?

Hair transplantation is usually performed under sedation using local anaesthesia to make you feel more comfortable and relaxed. After your skin becomes numb, you will not feel pain but you can feel the pressure and pulling forces during the process. General anaesthesia is used where more complex interventions such as tissue expansion and flaps are performed. In this case, you will be asleep during the entire operation and you will not feel anything.

FEATURES OF HAIR TRANSPLANTATION SURGERY

Hair transplantation is the removal of the scalp in small pieces from a donor area and transporting it to a balding or sparse area. Grafts can be of different sizes and shapes. Round-shaped punch grafts contain approximately 10-15 hairs. Smaller mini grafts contain 2-4 hairs. Slit grafts, which are placed in strips to shape the scalp, contain approximately 10 hairs. Strip grafts are longer and thinner and contain about 30-40 hairs.

The number of hair follicles taken in the surgery is approximately 50. In mini grafts and micrografts, this number can increase to 700 for each cure. Before the hair transplantation, the hair in the donor area is shortened for easier placement in the recipient area. For punch grafts, your doctor may use a special tube-like instrument made of sharp carbon steel. With this, he takes the grafts from the donor area and places them on the hairline, usually in the frontal region. In other types of grafts, they are taken from the hairy areas with the help of a scalpel and divided into small and thin pieces.

To create more skin tension, the serum is injected periodically into the area where the grafts are taken. In punch grafts, the donor site is closed with sutures. One suture is sufficient for each punch graft area. In other graft types, a thin scar may remain. Stitches can be hidden by the hair around them. Grafts are placed at intervals of 1/8 of an inch for the first time to ensure the healthy nourishment of the scalp. In the later stages, the spaces in between are filled. When the hair is placed, it is placed by the natural growth direction of the hair. After the grafting process is completed, the scalp is cleaned and covered with clean gauze covers.

Hair Transplantation with flap surgery

Flap surgery has been used successfully for more than 20 years. With this method, hairless areas are covered with the scalp in a very short time. The width and placement of the flaps are determined according to the needs and wishes of the patient. One flap carries hair equivalent to 350 or more punch grafts. In this technique, a piece of the hairless area is removed and the area carrying the scalp is moved toward the place of the removed area. The resulting scar can be hidden by the surrounding hair. In recent years, very successful results have been obtained by combining flap surgery with tissue expansion or scalp reduction techniques. Thus, more scalp is obtained and a more natural hairline is created.

Shrinking the scalp

With this technique, the part removed from the scalp is closed by advancing the surrounding scalp. This technique can be applied especially for hair loss on the top and back. It is not useful in creating the frontal hairline. After local anaesthesia is applied to the scalp, a part of the balding skin is removed. The size and shape of the removed part vary according to the patient’s expectations. If a large piece needs to be removed, an inverted Y-shaped incision is preferred. The shape of the removed part may be U-shaped, oval-shaped or other shapes. To close the place of the removed part, the surrounding hairy tissue is loosened and advanced and closed with sutures.

AFTER HAIR TRANSPLANT

If a bandage is used, it is usually removed after the first day. You can wash your hair very gently two days after hair transplantation. Your stitches will be removed between a week and 10 days. In many patients who have had a hair transplant, the transplanted hair may fall out about 6 weeks after the hair transplant. This is normal and is almost always temporary. After the hair falls out, it will take 5-6 weeks for the hair to regrow.

How much does a hair transplant cost?

The cost of a hair transplant depends on several factors, such as the technique used, the number of grafts required, the location and reputation of the clinic, and the experience and skill of the surgeon. We have some treatment packages to make the procedure more affordable for you.

  • Turkey: $2,000 – $5,000
  • USA/UK: $5,000 – $15,000
  • India/Mexico: $2,000 – $6,000
How long does a hair transplant procedure take?

A hair transplant procedure typically takes between 4 to 8 hours, depending on the number of grafts required. Some patients may need multiple sessions for larger areas of baldness, and the length of time can vary accordingly. You’ll be made comfortable.

Will I feel pain during and after the transplant?

Not necessarily. There is an element of discomfort in any surgical procedure even if it is just the prick you feel when the anaesthesia is administered. Extracting and replanting the grafts takes several hours. Most patients relax during this time and they sometimes fall asleep. We will make every effort to keep you relaxed and comfortable.

Who is a good candidate for a hair transplant?

✅ People with male or female pattern baldness
✅ Those with stable donor hair (typically at the back or sides of the head)
✅ Individuals in good health with realistic expectations
❌ Not recommended for people with severe hair loss, medical conditions affecting hair growth, or active scalp infections.

How long does it take to see results?

🕒 1-3 months: Shedding of transplanted hair (shock loss, normal process)
🕒 3-6 months: New hair starts growing
🕒 6-12 months: Visible growth & thicker hair
🕒 12-18 months: Full results with natural-looking density

Are the results permanent?

Yes! The transplanted hair is taken from a genetically resistant area and should last for a lifetime. However, natural hair loss may still occur, so maintenance treatments may be recommended.

What is the success rate of hair transplants?

The success rate is typically 90-95% when performed by an experienced surgeon. Proper post-op care also plays a crucial role.

Can women get hair transplants?

Yes! Women with thinning hair, traction alopecia, or hair loss due to surgery or burns can benefit from a hair transplant. However, not all female hair loss types are suitable for transplants.
